So today was the World Water Day event here at Mac. Someone from the Millennium Development Goals was here, the Sierra Club sponsored it, Think Outside the Bottle spoke, and a teacher from Mexico gave an awesome presentation. There was even food! However, the attendance was dismal. About five people not directly connected with the event came, and that includes two of my friends (one of whom works on TOTB with me) and a TOTB volunteer from the U of M. Why was no one there?
It’s entirely possible that people were just busy. Wednesday night classes, Exco classes, homework…I also could have publicized it better, but it was as well done as most of the theater shows, and people got to those. The lack of attendance strikes me more as a function of lack of interest. Our college is very focused on renewable energy / energy efficiency and community organizing, but other environmental topics seem to fall by the wayside. In this case, it’s water availability.
Water will define the coming years, as scarcity will only increase with global warming. It is time to really develop efficient and equitable water distribution infrastructure with supply and demand-side conservation efforts. We need to realize our responsibility to the future, and make sure there will always be enough water.
If you think wars over oil are bad, wait for the wars over water.
